Ridiculous Electric Bills???

Could someone tell me how electric companies charge u astronomical bill when I'm sitting in my home all day w/o putting on the a/c? I'm conscious of high electricity usage & I deliberately refuse to use my a/c particularly when I'm home alone. My family has gotten used to me advocating don't leave any lights on when not in use! I unplug any unused appliances, I changed all windows & doors few years ago & lastly all my kitchen appliances are less than a year old! I changed my sidings less than 6months ago! What else do I need to do to cut my electricity bill down? I hardly watch TV, I don't put on the radio! I spend more time on my laptop but for heaven's sake not 24/7!!!

For example its 5.15pm today & I've not put on my a/c all day long. It was last put on last night for about 90mins & was put off by 1.00am! Throughout last week with temperatures soaring into the 90s, I put my a/c on for a maximum period of 60-90mins at a time & then put it off for at least another 3-4hrs before I put it back on momentarily because I really can't tolerate being cold for too long. I have my fans (not the a/c fan!), ceiling & standing fans running instead.

I hardly cook & when I do I have so much left over (& especially from parties) that all I do is warm in the microwave to eat. I do laundry on weekends & every other weekends! My laundry machines are energy efficient!

Can someone advise me who to complain to? I have a strong feeling that these electric companies just charge arbitrarily. I've seen friends & neighbors have similar complaints & when the electric companies are informed, they checked the meters out & did literally nothing to change the bills. They only come to the conclusion that the residents must be using that much energy! I am confident that I'm not using all that energy because there were several days & nights I found myself sweating & smoldering in the heat in my home but I just refuse to use the a/c because I was afraid of the resulting cost & my inability to pay for it!

Someone save me please from the hands of these electric company gaugers!!! I have no idea how they arrive at their calculations-there seems to be more of guesstimation going on around here!
